Financing Tertiary Education

“Financing Tertiary Education: Deliberating the Critical Issues for Jamaica” is the title of public lecture organized by the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), UWI, Mona. The lecture which is part of the SALISES Colloquim Series is scheduled for Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. at Executive Lecture Theatre, Mona School of Business, UWI. Dr. Peter-John Gordon, Economist and Research Fellow, SALISES will deliver the lecture.
The university community and the public are invited.
International Masters Debut at JNBS UWI Chess Tournament

The UWI Chess Society at UWI, Mona will host the "JNBS UWI Chess Open" on March 15-21, 2010 at UWI, Mona. International Masters Marko Zivanic from the University of Texas and Giorgi Margvelashvili from the University of Maryland will be among the top chess players who will debut at the tournament. Also among the line up are National Masters, Damion Davy and Brandon Wilson from UWI, Mona. This year’s tournament is expected to see over 400 local players from tertiary institutions, high schools and clubs participating in the Chess Tournament.
Literacy Symposium 2010

“Making the Literacy Improvement a Reality for Adolescents and At-Risk Youths” is the theme of this year’s Literacy Symposium hosted by the School of Education, UWI, Mona. The Symposium takes place on March 11-12, 2010 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre starting at 9 am daily.
The keynote speakers include: Dr. Patricia Saul, Deputy Principal, Erdiston Teachers’ Training College and Immediate Past President, Barbados Association of Reading and Dr. Constance Weaver, Heckert Professor of Reading and Writing, Miami University, Ohio. The Symposium will involve workshops and panel presentations on topics including: Literacy and Social Justice, Best Practice in Assessment, Recovering At Risk Youth and Literacy Across the Curriculum.
JAMNAV Celebrates First Anniversary

The Mona GeoInformatics Institute (MonaGIS) at UWI, Mona celebrates the first anniversary of JAMNAV, a GPS navigation map of Jamaican roads and points of interest developed by MonaGIS. The Celebrations take place on Friday, March 12, 2010.
On this occasion new applications will be launched and highlights of the first year will be given.
26th Elsa Goveia Lecture
The Department of History and Archaeology, UWI, Mona will host the 26th annual Elsa Goveia Lecture under the theme, “Powerless Masters: The Curious Decline of Jamaican Sugar Planters in the Foundational Period of British Abolitionism.” The Lecture will be delivered by Professor Trevor Burnard, Professor of the History of the Americas, History and Comparative American Studies, University of Warwick on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 5 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA).

Pure and Applied Sciences Annual Awards Ceremony

The Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences will host its annual awards ceremony on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 3 pm at the New Chemistry Lecture Theatre (Chem 5). The awards ceremony is designed to recognize outstanding undergraduate students.

“States of Freedom: Freedom of States" Symposium

The University of the West Indies, Mona and Duke University will be hosting a symposium under the theme " States of Freedom: Freedom of States," at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge, UWI, Mona, on June 17-18, 2010. The symposium explores questions of freedom and governance generated from the heart of creolization; a process that forged a uniquely global exploitation of discrete island territories for economic activity, regional influence, and military advantage by many of the major European metropoles.
UWI, Mona Takes Plastic Bottle Recycling Project to Neighbouring Schools

The University of the West Indies, Mona will launch the expansion phase of the Plastic Bottle Separation and Recovery for Recycling Project on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 10 am at the Undercroft. The Project dubbed, “UWI Environmental Outreach Plastic Bottle Recycling Project” will see the participation of at least ten (10) schools in the Mona and Papine areas.
The Project is designed to develop an institutional culture of plastic bottle and container recovery in the recycling schools. It will see the involvement of residing students and commuting students from Environmental Clubs at UWI, Mona partnering with select schools to foster the culture of recycling. The Project is funded by the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica.
UWI, Mona Sports Day

The annual UWI, Mona Sports Day organized by the Sports Office takes place on Thursday, March 4, 2010 starting at 9 am at the Mona Bowl. The Day’s activities features fifteen track and field events including: 100 M, 200 M, 800 M, 1500 M, 3000 M, long jump, high jump, discus, javelin, triple jump, relays and hurdles. A dress parade and cheerleading competition will also be a part of the lineup.
During the Opening Ceremony which starts at 1:15 pm four UWI staff members will be honoured for their outstanding contribution to sporting development at UWI, Mona. The honourees are Joseph Pereira, Dr. Thelora Reynolds, Peter O’Sullivan and Horton Dolphin.
Film Screening: "Poto Mitan"

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures in collaboration with the Institute of Gender Studies at UWI, Mona present a film screening titled, “Poto Mitan Haitian Women Pillars of the Global Economy.” The screening takes place on Monday, March 8, 2010 at 7 pm at N4.
The event is designed to commemorate International Women’s Day and to educate and support the public about Haiti’s past, present and future rebuilding.
