Free and Open Source Software

MITS embraces the use of Free Open Source Software (FOSS) where it is practical and convenient to do so. This is quite in keeping with the direction that a significant number of tertiary institutions are embarking on or being encouraged to take.

Below is an extract from the ICT Strategic Plan drafted by the Principal’s office ‘ICT StrategicPlanProjects.xls’
Project Idea/Description: Develop & Implement Open Source Software (OSS) pilot projects on campus.

Rationale:
1. Reduction in licensing cost to the campus,
2. Augmentation of skill base of MITS staff,
3. Provide leadership & consultancy services to industry on OSS

There is currently an attempt to introduce FOSS gradually and where practical, as a replacement for some of our expensive proprietary options.
