Established in1995, Aston Preston Hall has earned its name as the cultural mecca of the UWI. Sandals Mona, as the hall is commonly called, continues to be the hall of choice for a diverse and fulfilling university experience.
Chancellor Hall was named in honour of the first Chancellor of the University, Her Royal Highness Princess Alice - Countess of Athlone, and was opened to University students in 1953. Although University students lived in Chancellor Hall from 1953, Chancellor did not become an official Hall of residence until September 1954.
Irvine Hall, the University’s first hall of residence was built in 1950. The hall was named after the chairman of the founding committee of the University College of the West Indies (later renamed the University of the West Indies), Sir James Irvine.
Located to the east of the Ring-Road at the UWI Mona Campus, MSH, as the Hall is commonly referred, proudly maintains the prestigious status of being the only all female sorority on the campus and share a relationship with our brother Hall of the North, Chancellor. This coalition is referred to as the ChanSea tradition.
Located only a short walk from the Mona Bowl, the Hall is nestled comfortably in the foothills of of the famed Blue Mountain Peak. This location is quiet and serene, far away from the ‘humdrum’ of Campus life and undoubtably fosters good study habits which are vital for survival at this University. With nine clusters and large open spaces the Hall is ideal for community life.
Named after the first principal of the University College of the West Indies, Sir Thomas Weston Johns Taylor, Taylor Hall was first opened in 1953 with 101 students in total. The Pelican, our official mascot to date replaced the bell and later the cast iron ball. The Pelican is also a part of the proud crest of the University of the West Indies.
