Sustainable development is made manifest in a country's ability to, "meet the basic needs of employment, food, energy, water and sanitation" (Mondal, 2016). The skill sets and employability of the adult population must become a key focus. This research seeks to examine the reasons participants embarked upon the Spa Therapy programme; the participants' perceptions, attitudes and experiences during the program; the reasons some trainees withdrew from the programme and the completing participants' projections for the future.

Methodology

Qualitative research (Case study). The researcher interacted with 19 other trainees for 11-months. Research duration: 6-months. Data collection: Focus group sessions, individual interviews, and participant observation.

Results

Emerging themes -

  • Affordability -Training cost within reach.
  • Convenience -Weekend classes.
  • Independence -Chart their own future/ becoming entrepreneurs.
  • Change -Personal growth, flexibility, improved job prospects, social acceptance, life values, opportunities and new beginnings.
  • Family support -Relatives assisted (moral, financial, or baby-sitting services).
  • Perseverance –Overcoming personal struggles. Many discontinued mid-stream

Conclusion

This study represents the beginning of a journey to explore and hopefully unlock the full potential of Spa Therapy as a viable option for Technical and Vocational Education and Training in a Caribbean nation that has unique historical, social, and pedagogical challenges and possibilities.

Relevance and Potential Application

This research can:

  1. Guide HCBS administrators in crafting plans for this programme in terms of promotion.
  2. Assist in the policy development process at the HEART Trust NTA.
  3. Inform TVET stakeholders in general and macro-economic planning for decision makers in Government, since TVET certification is critical in supporting sustainable development.
