In August 1978, UNICEF agreed to fund this primary school project, and reaffirmed the objectives which had been agreed on in previous discussions with the University. These objectives were: 
 

1. to develop curricula in environmental studies and elements of social studies; 
2. to develop an integrated approach towards teaching of these curriculum areas with ancillary benefits for language arts; 
3. to develop the material (software) as well as provide some of the equipment (hardware) needed to support the training activities; 
4. to train a cadre of personnel from the staff of Ministries of Education, teachers' colleges and primary schools in the implementation of the proposed curricula.
