Abstract:

As the world's population continues to rise, and as the rate of pregnancies in teenage girls shows little sign of dropping to an acceptable level, the need for a well-planned and well-taught sex education programme in Jamaican schools becomes even more urgent. Some territories in the Caribbean have had such programmes for some time, and these have proven to be most effective if started from the early years of primary schooling. Jamaica, however, has largely relied upon its science teachers to impart what knowledge they can, or upon a Family Life Education programme conducted by that rare bird, the Guidance Counsellor, and has concentrated upon the secondary level student. Few teachers are trained to teach a topic which involves not only the imparting of factual knowledge, but also the discussion of personal, societal and human values and attitudes, and few books are available to help them.
