Abstract:

This valuable bibliography of research in gender and education in the Commonwealth Caribbean has been carefully compiled at the request of the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) Centre for Gender and Development Studies and published by the Institute of Education of the UWI, Mona, with funding support from UNESCO.
The 397 entries include books, journal articles, monographs, conference papers, theses and dissertations, as well as some unpublished manuscripts. They have been placed under three major categories with 28 themes or topics listed under Areas of Research and arranged alphabetically from Achievement to Technical and Vocational Education and Training. The earliest entry is dated 1951 (Entry 100: the MA thesis of Shirley Gordon entitled Demands for the education of girls 1790–1865) but the majority of the entries reflect the special interest in gender which emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s and strengthened in the 1980s and 1990s.
