Abstract:

Any programme of sustainable development must include and should emphasize certification in technical, vocational education and training, and also create and support entrepreneurial opportunities for the youth. This research seeks to explore the perceptions, attitudes, experiences, and aspirations of twenty HEART Trust NTA Spa Therapy students while pursuing TVET certification at the HEART College of Beauty Services (HCBS) over 44 weekends. The researcher conducted qualitative research, employing a case study approach, using participant observation and interviews to determine students’ reasons for embarking upon the programme, their experiences during enrollment, reasons for withdrawal, and expectations upon successful completion. The researcher found that all participants wanted to start their own businesses but were daunted by the dim prospects of financial support. One recommendation was that the HEART Trust NTA should try to encourage organizations that are willing to take the risk of supporting a number of HEART graduates annually to start their own businesses (individually or collaboratively) through mentorship and financial aid; or encourage sponsorship in the form of business scholarships to outstanding HEART graduates. The research will be helpful in promoting the HCBS Spa Therapy programme; in assisting policymakers at the HEART Trust NTA and TVET stakeholders in general; as a guide for administrators at the HCBS; and as a consideration for macroeconomic planning by chief decisionmakers in government.
