Abstract:

This project investigated the impact of the use of high technology with environmental resources on student teachers' performances. The goal was to determine, first, if student teachers could create an interactive learning environment using environmental resources and high-tech, and second, their competency in doing so. "Environmental resources" or "low-tech" refers to those instructional materials and media that can be made from local materials and are readily available to the student teachers, while "high-tech" refers to instructional technology that involves computers, coupled with an integrated multimedia approach.
The participants were drawn from a population of 89 part-time student teachers who were completing a diploma in primary education. Of the total population of student teachers, 46 (51 per cent) of them returned a completed survey instrument and were included in the sample. The educational implication was determined by an examination of the literature, a survey questionnaire, and an informal interview. Results showed that student teachers were comfortable using the environmental resources but found it dcult to integrate high-tech and environmental resources to create interactive lessons. This result has implications for how student teachers perceive their role within an environment containing high technology and environmental resources.
