Abstract:

While there has been increasing interest in the process of becoming a teacher, very little attention has been paid to the process of becoming a teacher educator. Yet teachers of teachers go through the same process as teachers and experience similar influences that shape the kind of teacher educator they become. Important aspects of the learning process for teacher educators include becoming sensitive to their role and the special responsibilities entailed. Their success or failure in mastering this process of learning has significant implications for how they teach their students to teach . This paper is a report of work in progress and draws on a series of interviews with new college lecturers. It examines the factors that led these individuals to become teacher educators, the skills and attitudes they brought to that role and their perspectives on the process of preparing teachers.
