Abstract:

This paper presents the development of applied research components linked to a STEM programme in Environmental Sustainability Practices (ESP). The programme is embedded in the competency- based education and training (CBET) model and it anticipates the need for highly educated and trained sustainability practitioners, who will be excellent sustainable development problem solvers. The paper first argues that highly competent environmental sustainability practitioners, trained from the perspective of ‘STEM-focused TVET for sustainable development’, is an imperative for regional and national development and that applied research can be a potent integrative tool. The paper concludes by stating that the ESP programme will be important for national and regional sustainable development as it seeks to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to face the challenges of the green economy.
