Why do They Stay in the Teaching Profession? A Life Inquiry into Three Teachers' Experiences

The purpose of this life history inquiry was to contribute to the understanding of why teachers stay in the teaching profession. Life history inquiry, a qualitative approach, was utilized to explore the teachers' stories within their historical context as a source of knowledge. As such, each teacher'slife was presented in the context of narratives and analyzed within a constructivist framework of life history in order to make sense of their experiences of staying in the profession. Through purposive sampling, three teachers were selected.

Using life history inquiry, this study seeks to understand why three ordinary teachers like Nora, Norris, and Bob remained in the teaching profession. This qualitative study was conducted using life history interviews and artifacts to gather data. Through qualitative inquiry and thematic analysis, data were interpreted to gain insight into teachers' lives and their teaching practice. Three factors emerged as recurring themes over the course of this study.
