About the Discovery Bay Marine Lab
Nestled along Jamaica's picturesque north coast, the Discovery Bay Marine Lab (DBML) has been a beacon of marine exploration and conservation since its inception. Rooted in the diverse and vibrant Caribbean ecosystem, our laboratory serves as a nexus for groundbreaking research, innovative education, and fervent advocacy. Our team, a blend of seasoned marine scientists and enthusiastic young researchers, dives deep into the complexities of the ocean, from the colorful coral reefs to the elusive deep-sea inhabitants.
The perfect destination for educational field trips, scientific research, seminars and workshops
Located about 1 hour from the Montego Bay airport, DBML is situated on the water at Discovery Bay and is an excellent location for educational field trips, scientific research, seminars and workshops. The DBML has excellent research facilities with wet and dry labs, boats suitable for SCUBA diving and the only Hyberbaric Chamber in Jamaica for the treatment of divers and others through re-compression. There are also residential buildings which can accommodate up to 40 students and 20 faculty with full catering services.
Research at the DBML
The DBML tradition of groundbreaking research that was typified by our predecessors’ quest to understand local coral reefs and improve fisheries is being continued by our present Director and scientific team. Applied projects that focus on coastal resource protection and management, improving marine habitat quality, the provision of alternate livelihoods or increase the productivity of desirable ecosystem components are being given research priority.
