Language Section Week: Panel Discussion

In celebration of Language Section Week, the English Language Section of the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy at University of the West Indies, Mona Campus will host an engaging online panel discussion on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 4:30 p.m.

Under the theme, “The Intersection between Linguistics and the Teaching of Academic Literacies Courses,”  the conversation promises to engaging and thought-provoking.

The panel will feature an esteemed group of regional and international scholars and practitioners:

  • Dr. Shalieka Burris, Lecturer at University of Technology, Jamaica
  • Dr. Charles Ball, Associate Lecturer at Western Sydney University
  • Ms. Tereka Brown, Teaching Instructor at University of the West Indies, Mona Campus
  • Dr. Joseph Farquharson, Senior Lecturer at University of the West Indies, Mona
  • Dr. Tasheney Francis, Instructor and Examiner Trainer at University of Manitoba

Serving as discussant will be Dr. Nicole Scott, Lecturer at The Mico University College, who will provide critical reflections to deepen the dialogue. The session will be moderated by Mr. Annife Campbell, Teaching Instructor at University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.

This panel discussion offers a valuable opportunity for educators, researchers, students, members of the academic and wider community to engage in thoughtful exchange on the relationship between  linguistics and teaching  academic literacies at the tertiary level.

NEW PROGRAMME - Leadership and Professional Ethics

 The Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy is pleased to to introduce its new “Bachelor of Arts in Leadership and Professional Ethics” starting in September  2025 on the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies. This new programme is relevant to the anyone who desire university training in Leadership and Professional Ethics for increased efficiency in service and career growth.



The overall objectives of the new programme are to produce graduates who can:

1.    Apply theoretical and practical training in leadership and professional ethics to corporate and state matters.

2.    Analyse issues relating to leadership and ethics, especially with a multidisciplinary and intercultural orientation.

3.    Identify and evaluate leadership skills, values, choices, and actions in challenging situations that involve cognitive and ethical dilemmas.

English Language Proficiency Test April 21, 2023

The next sitting of the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) will be on Friday, April 21, 2023. The test will be held in the Assembly Hall at the UWI Mona Campus (Kingston) and Seminar Room E202 at the Western Jamaica Campus (Montego Bay). The test at both locations begins at 9:00 a.m.

Reistration closes on March 31, 2023.
