INTRODUCTION

The use of the five senses and reason are the basis of good medicine in the Hippocratic tradition. Of course, the limitations of this approach were eventually exposed because the Greeks did not permit autopsies and hence it was not possible to verify the diagnosis in those who died. With the passage of time and the advent of technology, it became possible to supplement, but not replace the use of the senses 526 Art of Medicine to arrive at a diagnosis and we came to recognize that much of the art of medicine lay in the application of the science of medicine.
