Celebrating Excellence: Physics Students Recognised by Honours Society

On Friday, March 20, 2026, the Physics Honours Society in the Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies, Mona hosted a breakfast to recognise and celebrate 26 students for their outstanding academic performance. The event brought together students and staff to mark their achievements and reinforce the importance of consistency and hard work. The keynote address at the breakfast was delivered by Michael Taylor, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology. He encouraged students to believe in their abilities, remain steady in the face of challenges, and act with integrity in their academic and professional lives.

The Physics Honours Society recognises and supports strong academic performance among students in the Department of Physics. It was established to encourage students to set high standards for themselves, with the aim of graduating with honours - first class or upper second class.

Membership in the Society is selective and reviewed each semester. It is open to Advanced Level students majoring in Physics. New students are admitted based on Level I Physics grades of B+ or higher, while continuing students are assessed based on their results in completed Advanced Level courses. Students are required to maintain at least a B average in Physics to remain in the Society.

Members benefit from recognition within the Department and are paired with a personal Physics mentor. They are invited to attend weekly colloquia and, in their final year, may participate in research groups. After two consecutive semesters in the Society, students become eligible for four weeks of summer employment with a departmental research group. Monthly breakfast seminars also form part of the programme.

The Physics Honours Society continues to support students who are committed to maintaining strong academic performance and making the most of the opportunities available to them.
