The Faculty of Science and Technology congratulates Professor Noureddine Benkeblia (Department of Life Sciences) for producing the top cited paper among work published in the Journal of Food Safety between January 1, 2021 and December 15, 2022. The recognition by the journal was for the article, ‘In the landscape of SARS-CoV-2 and fresh fruits and vegetables: The fake and hidden transmission risks.’ This paper reviews whether fruits and vegetables obtained from grocery stores can be a significant source or vehicle for transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It was concluded that the spread of the virus through contact with fresh produces is highly unlikely, but cannot be ignored.
