Ms. Leslie Hoo Fung, Research Scientist at the International Centre for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences (ICENS), The UWI Mona participated as a member of Jamaica's delegation to the second segment of the Fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP-4.2), held between March 19 and 25, 2022 in Bali, Indonesia.
Ms. Hoo Fung is also a member of the Group of Technical Experts on Waste Thresholds to be Established under the Convention. The expert group's report and recommendations were presented to the COP.
The expert group was formed in 2019 to examine the requirement under Article 11 of the Minamata Convention and to establish thresholds (limits) for several categories of mercury wastes. As the Conventions and the decisions made under it are legally binding the thresholds are to be established with a view to protection of the environment and human health.
