The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science and Technology at The UWI Mona successfully hosted the first round of the Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad for Juniors (Grades 4-6), drawing an impressive 2,200 students from over 100 schools across the island. This initiative is particularly significant given Jamaica's ongoing challenges with low mathematics pass rates at the secondary level. By engaging students at the primary and preparatory levels, the Olympiad aims to strengthen foundational math skills, build confidence, and nurture a lasting passion for the subject.
The Senior Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad (Grades 7-11) was held on February 8, 2025, with 414 students from approximately 30 schools participating. The competition continues with the final round for the Juniors scheduled for February 24, 2025, followed by the second round for the Seniors on March 1, 2025, culminating in the Senior final on March 15, 2025.
The Olympiad will conclude with an awards ceremony in April 2025.This year’s staging is once again proudly sponsored by New Fortress Energy.
By fostering problem-solving skills and critical thinking from an early age, the Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad continues to play a crucial role in shaping the future of mathematics in Jamaica and reinfirces the The Faculty committment in reinforcing our commitment to advancing STEM education in Jamaica.
