FST students participate in Huawei's Seed for the Future Programme

Seven Jamaican university students, including Donniver Haughton (Department of Physics, FST), Gawayne Wright, Renée Campbell, Kevaughn Williams (Department of Physics, FST), Brianna Hanson, Brendon Sadler (Department of Physics, FST), and Dahlia Richards, participated in Huawei's Seeds for the Future program in Costa Rica with other students from, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Panama, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, and Suriname. The program, a global corporate social responsibility initiative, provided technological, cultural, and soft skills training. The seven Jamaican students, representing the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech), and The University of the West Indies (UWI), engaged in activities such as classes, cultural experiences, and a Tech4Good project.

The Jamaican students, associated with the startup CardioPulse Connect, presented a wireless heart monitoring solution using AI analysis, assistive technology, and emergency response. The program exposed them to cutting-edge technologies like AI, 5G, and telecommunications. The students emphasized the program's role in enhancing both technical and soft skills, including leadership and personal development.

Beyond the academic aspects, the participants enjoyed cultural interactions and various adventures, including tours at Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center, Vista Los Sueños Adventure Park, and Costa Rica's Original Coffee Tour. The experience provided valuable insights into different cultures, teamwork, and real-world project coordination.

The Seeds for the Future program, running for 15 years globally and since 2015 in the Central America and Caribbean region, aims to foster technological skills, cultural understanding, and creativity among final-year university students. The program has impacted over 15,000 students from 137 countries and regions worldwide.
