Mathematics can be challenging but at The University of the West Indies, Mona, help is always close at hand. The Math Help Desk, located in the Department of Mathematics, provides free, face-to-face tutoring and guidance to students undergraduate and gradaute students across Faculties who need extra support in their math or math related courses. The help desk was fomally opened on September 15, 2025.
Many students across disciplines encounter difficulties with mathematical concepts, problem-solving, or exam preparation. Recognizing this, the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering (FOE), established the Math Help Desk to provide students with a supportive environment where they can strengthen their skills and build confidence in mathematics. The initiative aims not only to improve students’ academic performance but also to nurture their appreciation for the subject as a foundation for scientific and technical excellence. By offering consistent, personalized help, the Help Desk bridges the gap between classroom learning and individual understanding — empowering students to thrive academically.
The Math Help Desk offers one-on-one tutoring sessions led by trained peer mentors — advanced level students majoring in Mathematics or Engineering. These mentors are passionate about helping others master the subject and are well-equipped to guide students through: Problem-solving technique, Concept clarification, Homework and exam preparation and Building mathematical confidence.
Students can visit the Help Desk at any time during operating hours to receive personalized assistance and practical advice on tackling mathematical challenges.
The Math Help Desk is led by Mr. Stephon De Souze (Science and Technology) and Mr. Jordan Spence (Engineering) both Applied Mathematicans and supported by a team of dedicated peer mentors. Together, they are committed to helping students strengthen their mathematical abilities and achieve academic success.
