The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, mourns the passing of our colleague, Mr Joel James, who died on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

Joel’s association with the Faculty of Science and Technology began as a student in the Department of Life Sciences. He earned his BSc in Environmental Biology from the Faculty in 2024 and returned in 2025 to serve as a Laboratory Technologist in the Department of Life Sciences, a position he held with dedication until his passing.

As a Laboratory Technologist, Joel played an important role in supporting the Department’s teaching and learning activities. He assisted with the preparation and organisation of laboratory materials and equipment, supported practical sessions and helped to ensure that students and academic staff had the resources needed to carry out their work effectively. He approached his responsibilities with care, professionalism and a genuine willingness to help.

Joel was particularly valued for the way he interacted with students. His patience, approachability and ability to explain scientific and technical matters helped students feel more comfortable and confident in the laboratory. He did more than complete his assigned duties; he contributed to a welcoming and supportive learning environment in which students felt able to ask questions and seek guidance.

His transition from student to member of staff reflected his strong scientific foundation, extensive knowledge and natural aptitude for research. He was a dependable colleague who could be counted on to assist wherever needed, and his knowledge, interpersonal skills and commitment made him a valued member of the Department.

Beyond his professional contributions, Joel will be remembered as a kind, considerate and joyful young man who was always willing to assist others. A gifted conversationalist, he connected easily with students and colleagues and brought warmth and positive energy to those around him. He was deeply loved and respected by academic, administrative and technical staff alike.

As one of the first students to return to face-to-face classes following the COVID-19 pandemic, Joel quickly became a central and reassuring presence among his peers—so much so that he was affectionately referred to as “the centre.” His admirable qualities later led to his selection to assist other students, a responsibility in which he excelled.

Joel was also known as a protector. During excursions, he paid special attention to the safety and well-being of the female students, ensuring that everyone was supported and cared for. His kindness, dependability and genuine concern for others left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

In recognition of his passing, The UWI flags were flown at half-mast on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The University extends heartfelt condolences to Joel’s family, friends, colleagues, students and all whose lives he touched. His journey from FST student to valued colleague, his contribution to the Department of Life Sciences and his generous and caring spirit will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
