Professor Dale Webber Advances Caribbean Ocean and Climate Agenda at International Conferences

Professor Dale Webber, Director of the Centre for Marine Sciences in the Faculty of Science and Technology,  The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona and Jamaica’s Special Envoy for Climate Change and Environment, recently represented the region at two major international gatherings focused on marine science, blue carbon, and climate action.

From April 15–16, Professor Webber participated in The Nature Conservancy’s Capacity Building Workshop, where he contributed to critical discussions on the UNFCCC framework and opportunities for climate financing pathways. He delivered the opening remarks and presented on “The State of the Art of Blue Carbon Science in the Region: Research Priorities, Challenges and Future Applications,” offering insights into Caribbean research leadership in blue carbon science. He also moderated a high-level panel on the role of science in finance for nature, emphasizing the need to align scientific data with climate funding mechanisms.

Continuing his international engagement, Professor Webber travelled to Busan, South Korea from April 28–30 to attend the One Ocean Conference. The conferene aimed to make significant progress in the next decade by highlighting the need to transition from an "ocean in crisis" to an "ocean of hope" through the delivery of smart, concrete, and intuitive governance actions.Representing Jamaica, Professor Webber served as one of five expert panellists in Plenary Session #3: Climate Change and Actions for Reducing Carbon in Our Oceans. His presentation, titled “Jamaica’s Actions for Carbon Reduction in Our Oceans,” showcased the country’s proactive measures to safeguard marine ecosystems and support the blue economy, including efforts in coastal restoration, marine policy, and ocean-based mitigation strategies
