The work of the American Chemical Society (ACS) Jamaica Student Chapter was featured at the ACS' Spring Conference, held in San Diego, California from March 23–27, 2025. Representing the Chapter were Faculty Advisor, Dr. Andrea Goldson-Barnaby, a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, along with members Nadesha Pinnock and Daina Barrett (chemistry graduate students in the FST), who contributed through poster and oral presentations, respectively.
Dr. Goldson-Barnaby delivered two presentations highlighting the Chapter’s vibrant outreach and experiential learning initiatives: “Transforming Theory to Practical: Visits to a Local Coffee Farm and Worthy Park Estate” and “Chemistry Festivals Hosted in Urban and Rural Jamaica”. The first presentation focused on student visits to local industrial sites, offering practical insights into how theoretical concepts are applied in real-world settings such as agriculture and manufacturing. The second detailed the Chapter’s successful chemistry festivals, which bring interactive science demonstrations to communities across Jamaica—rural and urban—making chemistry engaging and accessible to the wider public.
These presentations are a demonstration of one of the Chapter’s goals of bridging academic learning with real-world applications and to promoting public science outreach. The participation of student members alongside their Faculty Advisor reflects the collaborative spirit and academic excellence of the Department of Chemistry and the broader UWI Mona community.
