On December 9, 2025, members of the Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory (DBML) participated in a wellness and psychosocial support session facilitated by Dr. Debbie-Ann Chambers, Counselling Psychologist and Wellness Officer in the Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies (UWI). The session was organized in response to the impact of Hurricane Melissa, which had significantly affected several staff members both professionally and personally.
Natural disasters such as hurricanes often leave lasting psychological effects long after physical recovery efforts have begun. In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, some DBML staff experienced symptoms associated with post-traumatic stress, alongside other emotional and personal challenges. Recognizing the importance of mental and emotional well-being in recovery, DBML prioritized providing structured support to help staff process their experiences in a healthy and supportive environment.
The session was highly engaging and created a safe, confidential space where participants were encouraged to openly share their feelings, concerns, and personal experiences. Dr. Chambers guided discussions with sensitivity and professionalism, allowing staff to reflect on the emotional impact of the disaster while fostering mutual support among colleagues.
Practical coping strategies were shared to help participants manage stress, anxiety, and emotional fatigue, particularly in the context of ongoing recovery and workplace demands. These strategies aimed to equip staff with tools to navigate both immediate challenges and longer-term emotional responses following the disaster.
Participants reported feelings of relief, emotional release, and reassurance at the conclusion of the session. The initiative underscored the critical role of wellness interventions in disaster recovery, highlighting that emotional healing is an essential component of resilience, productivity, and overall well-being in the workplace.
