Dr. Debbie-Ann Gordon-Smith, an Environmental and Analytical Chemist in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus has secured grant funding of GBP £8,153 as a partner on an exciting new international research project titled, "Re-evaluating Late Holocene Storm Reconstructions in Jamaica Following the Passage of Hurricane Beryl.”
This project is being undertaken in collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University and University College London, and is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), UK. The research will run from May 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026. The study aims to reassess storm records from the Late Holocene period using new data and insights gained in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, which significantly impacted Jamaica. By combining geological evidence with cutting-edge climate science, the project will enhance our understanding of past storm activities and their implications for future climate resilience in the Caribbean.
We congratulate Dr. Gordon-Smith on this important achievement and look forward to the impactful outcomes of this collaborative effort.
