Emerging Uplifted: The Journey of Donniver Haughton

When Donniver Haughton reflects on his time at the University of the West Indies (The UWI), he often thinks of Archimedes’ Principle which states that “when a body is partially or wholly submerged in a fluid, the weight of the fluid displaced is equal to the upward buoyancy exerted”. As a first-generation graduate, Donniver was fully immersed in university life and emerged with resilience, purpose, and a Bachelor of Science in Medical Physics (Upper Second Class) from the Faculty of Science and Technology.

Throughout his academic journey, Donniver balanced scholarship with service. He served as a Physics and Engineering Adjunct Laboratory Demonstrator, supported outreach through the CAPE Physics Workshop and UWI Open House.

Leadership became a defining feature of his experience. As President of the Medical Physics Club, he coordinated outreach to ICENS and St. Joseph’s Hospital, connecting theory to real-world medical applications. As Deputy Block Representative for Taylor Hall, Block C (Roosters), he organized panel discussions with academics, politicians, and student advocates, and assisted with a student exchange initiative between UWI and the University of West Georgia.

Donniver’s impact extended across campus through roles including Deputy Physics Department Representative, Public Relations Officer for the UWI Debating and Public Speaking Society, Tenor Singer in the Taylor Chorale, and leadership within the Faculty Guild Council. His passion for innovation was further demonstrated when his team placed 4th overall in the Huawei Seeds for the Future: Tech4Good Competition, presenting an AI-inclusive heart-monitoring prototype. He was also inducted into the Physics Honours Society, named a UWI STAT Ambassador, and served as a Huawei Seeds for the Future Campus Ambassador.

Grounded in gratitude to God, family, and friends, Donniver now looks ahead to pursuing a Master of Science in Clinical Medical Physics, committed to excellence, service, and advancing healthcare through science.
