Fabian Kyne was recently awarded a PhD in Marine Science (2026) from the Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona. His passion for the ocean began at an early age, sparked by fishing trips with his grandfather. This early connection with the sea inspired him to become a scuba diver and pursue a career in marine science.

He completed a BSc in Marine Biology at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, in 2009, followed by an Erasmus Mundus MSc in Marine Environment and Resources at the University of Southampton. He then spent several years working in Jamaica, supporting the establishment of marine protected areas and collecting data to better understand coral reef health and fisheries and costal communities. In 2019, he enrolled in The UWI to pursue his MPhil/PhD in Marine Science.

Supervised by Professor Mona Webber and Dr Stephanie Green, his doctoral research, “Examining a Social-Ecological Systems Approach to Managing Widespread Biological Invasions,” explored how ecological, social and economic considerations can be brought together to develop practical approaches to managing lionfish and other invasive species in Belize and beyond.

Fabian brings this experience to his work with the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund, where he focuses on strengthening inclusive approaches to ocean governance and advancing marine protection across the Caribbean. He is passionate about supporting Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in addressing the challenges facing their marine environments.

Outside of work, Fabian enjoys scuba diving and mentoring emerging marine science professionals. He is committed to building capacity, supporting the next generation of Caribbean ocean leaders, and driving conservation impact across the wider Caribbean.
