FST Grad Student Tracy-Ann Hyman Cops First Prize in Vincent HoSang UWI Venture Competition 2025 with Innovative Disaster Management System

Graduate student Tracy-Ann Hyman (and colleagues) of the Faculty of Science and Technology emerged as a standout innovator at the finals of the 2024/25 Vincent HoSang UWI Venture Competition, held at the Mona School of Business and Management on Friday, January 24, 2025. As co-founder of Artel, alongside teammate Maurice Mason from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Tracy-Ann played a pivotal role in developing a revolutionary disaster management system that secured the top prize in the competition.

The competition, which began in September 2024 with over 100 students from all faculties at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus, showcased visionary solutions addressing critical regional challenges. Tracy-Ann and her team distinguished themselves with their cutting-edge platform that integrates flood impact analysis, evacuation protocols, and early warning systems, offering a powerful defense against natural disasters.

For their groundbreaking innovation, Artel was awarded J$400,000 and a fully funded summer journey to New York. As part of their prize, Tracy-Ann and Maurice will receive mentorship from leading Jamaican business professionals and tour Caribbean Food Delight’s operations alongside members of the HoSang family. This experience will provide valuable insights into scaling their business and refining their disaster management platform for real-world application.

Well done, Tracy-Ann!
