Department of Computing Launches Honours Society to Celebrate Student Excellence

The Department of Computing headed by Dr. Daniel Fokum, in collaboration with the Computing Subcommittee of the FST Guild represented by Roshae Sinclair has officially launched its Honours Society, marking a significant step forward in the recognition of academic excellence and student achievement within the department.

This newly established society aims to celebrate outstanding undergraduate students who have demonstrated academic excellence and commitment to their studies in Computing. The inaugural induction ceremony took place on March 20, 2025, in Room C5, where fifty-two (52) exceptional second- and third-year students were formally inducted.

Students were selected based on the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a major in Computing and have attempted at least 9 credits in Semester I of the 2024/2025 academic year.
  • Must have achieved a semester GPA and cumulative GPA of at least 3.3, including a semester GPA of 3.3 or higher in their Computing courses
  • Must not have failed any courses during the semester.
  • Must have been enrolled in at least one Computing course during Semester I, 2024/2025.

In addition to the inducted members, eighty (80) first-year students who met the academic threshold have qualified to receive letters of commendation in recognition of their strong academic performance in their first semester.

Beyond celebrating academic achievement, the Computing Honours Society seeks to foster a sense of community, motivation, and continued scholarly excellence among Computing students. The Department and Guild Subcommittee are committed to building on this initiative in future years, expanding its reach and impact.

With the launch of the Computing Honours Society, the Faculty of Science and Technology now proudly hosts four Honours Societies: Chemistry Honours Society, Computing Honours Society, Life Sciences Honours Society, Physics Honours Society.

These societies collectively reflect the Faculty’s commitment to academic distinction, student development, and recognition of excellence across disciplines.
