The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), The University of the West Indies, Mona, proudly congratulates outstanding Computer Science graduate Abishua Johnson on being selected as a 2026 Fulbright Scholar.
A first-generation university graduate, Abishua entered The UWI’s Bachelor of Science in Computer Science programme without having written a single line of code. Through determination, academic excellence and a passion for technology, he graduated in 2025 with First Class Honours and an impressive 4.01 GPA. He was also selected as valedictorian for the graduating classes of the Faculties of Science and Technology and Engineering.
Abishua’s work reflects his commitment to using data science and artificial intelligence to solve real-world challenges. His undergraduate capstone project, eLife, digitised the proof-of-life verification process used by Jamaican pensioners, transforming a procedure that could take weeks into one that can be completed within minutes. He also gained international research experience at the University of Leeds, where he worked on surgical motion-tracking algorithms.
Through the Fulbright Scholarship, Abishua will pursue studies in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Rice University in Houston, Texas. He hopes to deepen his expertise and advance his long-term vision of establishing a Jamaican research institute dedicated to developing technology that responds to Caribbean needs and realities.
Abishua was one of only four awardees selected from approximately 90 applicants—a testament to his academic achievement, leadership, innovation and potential to contribute meaningfully to Jamaica’s development.
The Faculty of Science and Technology celebrates this exceptional achievement and wishes Abishua continued success as he begins this exciting new chapter.
