ICENS Director General appointed Chairman of the Nuclear Energy Working Committee

Congratulations to Professor Charles Grant on his appointment as Chairman of the Nuclear Energy Working Committee in Jamaica, tasked with implementing Cabinet decisions to develop a roadmap for presentation to the Cabinet for the implementation of Nuclear Energy. This includes the execution of a Public Consultation process on Nuclear Energy and the establishment of a baseline for public knowledge on the subject.

Professor Grant is the Director General at the International Centre for Environmental (ICENS) and Nuclear Sciences, The University of the West Indies, Mona. He obtained his master's degree in Radiation and Environmental Physics in 1992, from the University of Surrey in England, with specializations in Reactor Physics and Neutron Activation Analysis. His impactful tenure at the Centre has been marked through every stage of transition, from Research Fellow to Head of the Nuclear Analytical Laboratory and Reactor Manager, to his current assignment as Director General. He has amassed more than thirty (30) years of experience in the operations and maintenance of the SLOWPOKE-2 research reactor. Professor Grant is also an International Atomic Energy Agency Expert and serves in the field of Research Reactors and Neutron Activation Analysis. To this end, he has performed several expert missions in Africa, Europe, Latin and Central America, and the Caribbean.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, and recipient of the 2020 University of the West Indies Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellence and was elevated to the rank of Professor in 2020. In 2023, Professor Grant received the coveted Principal's Research Award for the best Research Publication. Professor Grant will inter alia, develop a roadmap to explore the possibilities of including nuclear energy as an option in the national energy mix.
