Breaking Barriers Through Mathematics | UWI -UNICEF host Inaugural 'Special' Math Olympiad

Let’s break the stigma and continue to champion inclusion in education. Every student deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed especially in fields like mathematics that build confidence, problem-solving skills, and endless possibilities.

Under the EM² Project (Empowerment through Mentorship and Mathematics), a Mathematical Olympiad was hosted for students with special needs including those who are low vision, blind, hard of hearing, and deaf for the first time. The event was a powerful reminder that talent knows no boundaries when opportunity and support are present.

The Olympics brought together:

  1. 53 remarkable students
  2. 13 teams (5 juniors and 8 seniors)
  3. 4 participating institution
  4. 3 UWI-based Mathematicians
  5. 21 dedicated shadows/support (UWI student  mentors)
  6. 5 sign language interpreters
  7. 5 DCFs
  8. Supportive teachers and friends

Participating schools included:

  • Lister Mair Gilby High School for the Deaf – Papine & Port Antonio Units
  • May Pen Unit for the Deaf
  • Salvation Army School for the Blind and Visually Impaired

With the support of UNICEF Jamaica and The UWI Faculty of Science and Technology, the EM² Project continues to show that mathematics is a universal language, one that can empower students, build critical thinking, and open doors to STEM opportunities for everyone.

Inclusion is not just important, it is essential. And through initiatives like EM², we are proving that every mind matters in mathematics.
