UWI Mona Analytical Chemistry Laboratory Starts Global Chemicals Monitoring Project

The Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology, The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona has officially commenced its involvement in the Global Chemicals Monitoring Programme to Support the Implementation of the Stockholm and Minamata Conventions (GCMP). This Global Environment Facility (GEF)-approved initiative represents a significant step forward in Jamaica's commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable chemical monitoring.

Under the leadership of Dr. Raymond Reid, Senior Analytical Chemist in the Department of Chemistry, The UWI Mona team will conduct rigorous monitoring of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in both air and water, as well as mercury levels in water sources across Jamaica. The programme supports the global effort to eliminate or reduce the release of hazardous chemicals under the Stockholm Convention, while addressing mercury-related pollution concerns aligned with the Minamata Convention.

This project forms part of a National Coordinated Activity valued at approximately USD 85,000, aimed at strengthening regional scientific capacity and infrastructure for long-term, sustainable monitoring of harmful pollutants.

The UWI Mona Analytical Chemistry Laboratory is proud to contribute to this global initiative, working alongside national and international partners to promote healthier ecosystems, informed environmental policies, and a more sustainable future for Jamaica and the wider Caribbean region.
