The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, congratulates Justin Watts on his selection to participate in the Heidelberg Laureate Forum, to be held September 13–18, 2026 in Heidelberg.
Justin, a graduate student in the FST is currently pursuing an MPhil in Mathematics. His research, titled “Evaluating the Effectiveness of Non-pharmaceutical Interventions on the Transmission of COVID-19 in Jamaica,” examines the impact of public health measures on disease spread in a local context. His application to the Forum was supported by recommendations from two UWI lecturers, including his supervisor, Dr. Tameka Royal-Thomas.
The Heidelberg Laureate Forum brings together recipients of the Abel Prize, Fields Medal and Turing Award with a group of early-career researchers from around the world. Over six days, participants engage in lectures, discussions and informal sessions with leading figures in mathematics and computer science.
All selected participants receive support from the organisers, including travel, accommodation and meals.
Justin shared that he is looking forward to the opportunity to learn from established researchers and to connect with other young scholars.
Justin holds a BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science with First Class Honours (2025) and graduated at the top of his class with the highest GPA.
