UWI Math Fair | Expanding Access to Quality Mathematics Support in Rural Jamaica

The Department of Mathematics at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, continues to play a pivotal role in improving mathematics performance among secondary school students through its flagship outreach initiative, The UWI Math Fair. Now in its fourth staging, the 2026 fair was hosted at Rusea’s High School in Lucea, Hanover, and marked a significant expansion in both scope and impact.

For the first time, the event was delivered as a two-day engagement, held on March 6–7, 2026, reflecting the Department’s deepened commitment to addressing persistent challenges in mathematics education—particularly in the wake of learning disruptions caused by Hurricane Melissa.

Day one, dubbed the Math Forum, focused on broadening students’ understanding of the relevance and possibilities within mathematics. Through dynamic presentations and interactive sessions, students explored academic pathways and career opportunities linked to the discipline. Guest speaker Romario Francis, Electrical Reliability Engineer at Discovery Bauxite Operations Ltd., delivered a compelling presentation on the real-world applications of mathematics in industry, helping students connect classroom learning to professional practice. The day also featured a lively Math Quiz Competition and a panel discussion, giving students direct access to faculty members and industry professionals in an open and engaging setting.

Day two shifted focus to targeted academic support, with a CSEC Mathematics Workshop designed specifically for Grade 11 students preparing for their examinations. In structured, classroom-style sessions, lecturers from the Department guided students through key syllabus areas, including Circle Geometry, Functions, Matrices, Transformations, Trigonometry, and Vectors. Participants were equipped with printed materials and resources to support continued learning beyond the workshop.

This additional day was a strategic response to the educational gaps exacerbated by Hurricane Melissa, underscoring the Department’s proactive role in national recovery efforts. By providing direct academic intervention, the initiative not only reinforced core concepts but also helped rebuild student confidence in tackling mathematics.

The fair engaged over 250 students from across western Jamaica, including schools in Hanover, Westmoreland, and St. James:  Rusea’s High School, Mt. Alvernia High School, Merlene Ottey High School, Petersfield High School, Irwin High School, Mannings School, Hopewell High School, Cambridge High School, St. James High School and Knockalv Technical High School The strong turnout and active participation highlighted both the demand for and the impact of such initiatives in strengthening mathematics education at the secondary level.

Support from key partners, including GraceKennedy Foundation, CIBC Caribbean, Island Car Rentals, the Students’ Loan Bureau, and the Office of the Campus Principal, was instrumental in delivering the expanded programme.

The Department also extends sincere appreciation to the leadership and staff of Rusea’s High School, led by Principal Mrs. Donna Anderson, for their partnership in hosting this impactful initiative.
