UWI-FST Chemistry Students Gain Real-World Experience at Jamalco Refinery

Fifteen chemistry students from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology, The University of the West Indies recently participated in an immersive educational tour at the Jamalco refinery, bringing classroom concepts to life through direct exposure to industrial operations.

The visit formed part of the students’ academic engagement in two core courses, Chemical Industries (CHEM3402) and Chemical Process Principles II (CHEM3440), both of which are compulsory components of the Applied Chemistry major. These courses introduce students to key areas such as bauxite processing, unit operations, industrial chemical reactors, and critical considerations surrounding safety hazards, risk management, and professional ethics.

During the tour, students were guided through key operational areas of the refinery, where they observed the Bayer Process in action, a central method in alumina production covered in their coursework. The experience provided valuable insight into real-world applications of fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, and large-scale chemical processing systems.

In addition to technical exposure, the students gained a deeper appreciation for industry standards in safety and operational reliability. Interactions with Jamalco’s professional team offered practical perspectives on engineering practices and workplace expectations in the energy and manufacturing sectors.

Student feedback highlighted the impact of the experience, describing it as informative, relatable, and confidence-boosting, particularly as they prepare for upcoming examinations.

This field trip was organised by Dr Rosemarie Wilson, second from right.
