ABOUT US

Welcome to Rex Nettleford Hall

As you formally join the region's premier academic family, the University of the West Indies, I welcome you to the Mona campus and the home around which you will revolve Rex Nettleford Hall. Doubtless, you will be aware of the person after whom your hall is named, the late Vice-Chancellor Emeritus Professor Ralston Milton 'Rex' Nettleford. Brilliant in the lecture hall and on stage with the National Dance Theatre Company, NDTC. Profs ethos of a balanced life and a decidedly Caribbean perspective survives his unfortunate passing and continues to radiate from your hall to permeate the Mona Campus. As such, you will not be surprised to hear multiple voices blending in joyful song at Choir Fest on Rex Nettleford Hall. You may find yourself leaving the campus to mentor students at Mona and Holy Trinity High Schools. Or you may be drawn to the hall's informal meeting point, Red Square, patting the pitch as you await the next delivery, or plotting to outdo your musical rivals in the next Rex DJ Competition. Service is critical to Rex Nettleford Hall which organises the annual Breast Cancer Walkathon, assists children in neighbouring communities with schoolwork through its Literacy Numeracy Values and Attitudes (LINVAT) programme and is home to the redoubtable White Gloves Society. You have the opportunity to get involved in these programmes and several others that facilitate personal development, which is, especially for those of you at the undergraduate level, the key to progress after completing this stage of your education. Your co-curricular involvement in no way precludes your achieving the highest academic standards. In fact, approached with the correct balance, it helps to provide you with the grounding and discipline necessary for a successful academic sojourn. Many Rexans before you have demonstrated this by participating extensively in campus life and graduating with honours. I encourage you to immerse yourself in all the Rex Nettleford Hall has to offer whether you live on or off-campus. I am sure that among its 800 residents from all over the Caribbean, you will find a role model and quickly develop into one yourself because you are expected to carry on and build upon the fine traditions of Rex Nettleford Hall for next year's incoming students. New 'Rexan' have a wholesome, invigorating and memorable time on your hall

Rex Nettleford Hall

Rex Nettleford Hall was first envisioned when the Director of Student Services, Dr Thelora Reynolds took office in 1996 and identified as one of the universities problems the need for an affordable housing solution that would satisfy a larger number of students. After consulting with Student Services Managers Mr Carlton Lowrie and Mr Peter O' Sullivan the group worked in coordination with the Executive Director of the National housing trust Mr Milverton Reynolds, and a plan was formulated to add new blocks to the Chancellor and Taylor Halls. Eventually, this plan evolved into a proposal for a 400 room extension to A. Z. Preston Hall and then to the construction of a new 800 room hall of Residence. That marked the birth of Rex Nettleford Hall. The Hall was officially opened in 2002.
