Transportation

Understanding how to travel safely and efficiently is an important part of settling into life in Jamaica. The Mona Campus is well connected to Kingston and surrounding communities, and a range of transportation options are available for students. The guidance below will help you navigate your arrival and travel around the city with confidence.

Getting from the Airport to Campus

Airport Transfers

Upon arriving in Jamaica, students are encouraged to use the services of the Jamaica Union of Travellers Association (JUTA) located at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston.

JUTA works closely with The UWI and regularly transports international and regional students safely to campus halls of residence or approved off campus accommodation.

This service comes at a cost, which may vary depending on the number of persons travelling together and the destination.

For airport pickup arrangements or additional support, you may contact:

JUTA Representative: Noel Williams
Telephone: (876) 401-5695 (WhatsApp)
Email: noelwilliams25@yahoo.com

Students are advised not to accept unsolicited transportation offers inside or outside the airport, and to use only licensed and reputable operators.

Getting Around Kingston and Campus

Common transportation options include:

  • Licensed taxis
  • Public Passenger Vehicles (PPVs)
  • Route taxis
  • Public buses operating along major corridors

Students living on campus will find that many essential services such as supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, and restaurants are located within walking distance or a short taxi ride away.

Taxi and Public Transport Safety

Taxi Operators and Safety Guidance

When using taxis or public transportation in Jamaica, students should observe the following guidelines:

  • Use only licensed taxis designated as Public Passenger Vehicles (PPVs). These vehicles carry red license plates.
  • Do not use unlicensed taxis, commonly referred to locally as “robots” or white plate vehicles.
  • Avoid entering vehicles that solicit passengers aggressively.
  • Confirm your destination and agree on the fare before starting your journey.
  • When unfamiliar with routes, travel during daylight hours where possible.
  • Share your location with a trusted friend or colleague when travelling alone.

If you are unsure about transportation options, you may contact the Campus Security Office for guidance and a list of approved taxi operators. There are over 300 licensed operators who regularly service the Campus community.

Students may also contact Campus Security if they require assistance or feel unsafe.
