Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP)

Description

The Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program is a Short-term Exchange Program funded by the Government of Canada. This scholarship provides students from post-secondary institutions located in Latin America and the Caribbean with short-term exchange opportunities for study or research at Canadian post-secondary institutions.

ELAP was established in 2009 to strengthen linkages between post-secondary institutions in Canada and the Americas and support the development of the next generation of leaders in the Americas. 

 

Eligibility Requirements

Elligible students must:

  • Be a citizen of the Caribbean, South America, Central America, or Mexico. See full list of countries.
  • Be enrolled full-time at post-secondary institution in an eligible country/territory.
  • Be paying tuition fees to that institution at the time of application and for the full duration of your exchange.
  • Not be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Not have a pending application for Canadian citizenship or permanent residency.
  • Not have already participated in a scholarship program funded by the Government of Canada.
  • Not be enrolled in a degree, diploma or certificate program at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

Appliction Process

  1. Review the eligibility requirements
  2. View list of active Canadian partners
  3. Speak with our Exchange Coordinator
  4. Apply for the Exchange indicating your interest in the ELAP Scholarship.

 

Duration

4 months for Undergraduate students

4-6 Months for Graduate students

 

Award Amount

$8,200 (4 months) or $11,100 (6 months)

Conditions for successful students

Students selected for the scholarship agree to:

  • engage in full-time studies or research as defined by the Canadian institution
  • abstain from clinical training or clinically-oriented research involving direct patient-care
  • focus primarily on full-time studies or research during your stay in Canada
  • return to your home institutions after the scholarship period to complete their studies

Failure to meet these conditions may result in the cancellation of your scholarship.

Additional information

  • Scholarships cannot be deferred and are not renewable
  • Scholarships are subject to availability of funding from the Government of Canada
  • Scholarships are not taxable for either the Canadian institution or the scholarship recipient

Students must return to their home institutions after the scholarship period to complete their studies.

Erasmus+

Erasmus+ offers UWI Mona students the chance to participate in student and doctoral candidate exchanges within EU countries and countries associated with the Erasmus+ program. These exchanges are designed to enhance communication, language, and intercultural skills, develop soft skills highly valued by employers, and provide opportunities for work experience through combined traineeships. By studying abroad, UWI Mona students can significantly enrich their academic and personal development.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Erasmus+ program, students must:

  • Be enrolled in a higher education institution participating in the Erasmus+ program.
  • Have completed at least one year of higher education studies.
  • Meet the language requirements of the host country or institution.

How to Apply

To apply for Erasmus+ mobility, follow these steps:

  1. Contact the International Office at The UWI Mona to express your interest.
  2. Research our Erasmus+ partner insitutions and the relevant course offerings.
  3. Submit the application form along with any required supporting documents to the Erasmus+ coordinator at UWI Mona.

Duration

Erasmus+ study periods can last:

  • Long-term Mobility: a minimum of 2 months to a maximum of 12 months abroad (including blended mobilities with a virtual component)
  • Short-term Mobility: between 5 and 30 days abroad (these must be blended mobilities)
  • Maximum Total Duration: 12 months within one study cycle. It is possible to do more than one exchange within that limit.

Conditions for Successful Students

To ensure a successful Erasmus+ experience, students must:

  • Attend all required orientation sessions organized by both UWI Mona and the host institution.
  • Complete and submit all academic requirements and reports as outlined by UWI Mona.
  • Comply with the rules and regulations of both UWI Mona and the host institution.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Exchange Coordinator at UWI Mona throughout the exchange period.

Award Amount and Financial Support

The Erasmus+ grant contributes to travel and daily living costs, with the amount depending on various conditions, including living cost differences between countries, the number of students applying for grants, and the availability of other grants. Erasmus+ students are exempt from tuition, registration, examination fees, and charges for access to laboratories or libraries at the host institution, although small fees for insurance or student union membership may still apply.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides yearly post-graduate scholarship opportunities to students from developing countries who wish to continue their research in Germany.
