Emergency Medicine Workshop
The Family Medicine Programme in the Department of Community Health & Psychiatry will be hosting an Emergency Medicine Workshop on Friday, May 26, from at 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the MPH Building.
The topics for discussion are: Hypertensive Crises; Asthma and Diabetic Emergencies; Burns, Chest Pain; Foreign Bodies with special focus on the ear, eye and soft tissue.
Japanese Intensive Course
The Department of Modern Languages is offering a non-credit three-week intensive course in Japanese starting May 22 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Monday – Friday. The cost is J$5000. For further information, please call the Language Laboratory at 927-2743 or ext. 2382.
Performance Management in the Public Sector
The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies, (SALISES) at The University of the West Indies, Mona in association with Ramboll Management Consultants in Hamburg, Germany presents a workshop on “Performance Management in the Public Sector.” The first and second lecture will be held on May 29 and the third and fourth lecture on June 2, the morning sessions run from 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and the afternoon session begins from 1:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. All sessions will be held at SALISES.
University F&GPC Decisions
Institute for Sustainable Development
The University Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GPC) has approved the restructuring and renaming of the University of the West Indies Centre for Environment and Development to the Institute for Sustainable Development.
Regional Centre of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management
The University F&GPC has approved in principle, subject to the securing of externally sourced funding the establishment of the Regional Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction Management.
Call for Papers Symposium in honour of Professor Edwin Jones
The Department of Government at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus is honoring Professor Edwin Jones for his significant contribution to his profession on November 25 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The theme of the symposium is “C21st Public Sector Management: The Way Forward for the Caribbean” and will focus on the area of scholarship as well as the problem solving impulse often captured by Professor Jones’ work.
Mechanical Engineering Workshop (MEW)
Professor Tara Dasgupta, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and Head of the Electronics Unit, is pleased to announce that the Mechanical Engineering Workshop (MEW) which is established as a self-financed entity at the site of the old Physics Workshop next to Juici Patties, is fully functional and ready to conduct business. The new workshop will provide professional mechanical engineering services categorized under three basic types: maintenance, design and fabrication, with a bias towards mechanical and electro-mechanical devises and systems.
UWI Lecturer receives Global Family Doctor Award
Dr Tomlin Paul, lecturer in the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry has been selected by the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) as the “Global Family Doctor” for May 2006. The "Global Family Doctor of the Month" Award is given to encourage philanthropy among primary care practitioners and to honour doctors giving their time and expertise to their global colleagues and their patients.
2nd Annual Research Ethics Conference
The Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies, through the Office of Sponsored Research, in collaboration with the University of Miami Bioethics Programme will be hosting the 2nd Annual Research Ethics Conference from May 19-20.

GIS Training
The Mona GeoInformatix is again offering GIS Training courses for beginners and advanced persons beginning on Monday, May 8 at the Mona Informatix facility. The introductory course has been extended and improved. Classes will be held Mondays and Fridays or Tuesdays and Thursdays. Training sessions last for 3 hours each and are conducted twice per week for a 6-week period.
