Centre for Caribbean Thought – Call for Papers
The Centre for Caribbean Thought announces its second call for papers for the annual “Caribbean Reasonings” conference in honour of Richard Hart. This year’s theme is Politics, Activism and History: The Life and Times of Richard Hart.

Certificate Courses at PSCCA
The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, U.W.I. is currently registering students for Personal Development and Income Generating Certificate Courses. These courses are part of our outreach and continuing education programme and are offered to students, staff and the wider community. The courses are Voice & Speech Training: Monday and Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., cost is $8000 – 6 weeks; Basic Floral Arrangement, Tuesday, 5:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m., cost $6000 - 6 weeks; Introduction to Sign Language: Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 p.m.
Chinese and Portuguese Courses
Students are invited to register on-line for the following preliminary courses in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Chinese - CHIN 0001and Portuguese - PORT 0001. Interested persons can also take these courses as specially admitted students.

Conference in Honour of Barry Chevannes
The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of the West Indies, will be hosting a conference in honour of Professor Barrington Chevannes’ lifetime scholarly work, service and achievement. The conference is scheduled to be held at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre from Thursday, January 19 to Saturday, Jasnuary 21.
Mammogram Day
The University Health Centre will host the Mobile Mammography Unit of the Jamaica Cancer Society on Thursday, February 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will also be educational videos on show, handouts and an opportunity to discuss your concerns about breast cancer and others with the medical staff. The cost of the mammogram is $440.00 with your insurance card. A down payment of $200.00 is required to book a place and the balance will be collected on the day of the test.
Online Banner System
The University of the West Indies has implemented a new Student Administration System, which will simplify and streamline administrative, processes and procedures, include all categories of students and include all areas of student administration.
This interactive online system will allow students to register, request academic approval for courses selected, request course overrides, make adjustments to registration-add/drop courses, check financial information and keep track of their progress toward the completion of their degree using Curriculum, Advising and Programme Planning (CAPP).
Research Day 2006
Plans are now advanced for Research Day 2006 at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Research Day 2006 will take place on January 26 and 27 with the theme CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME): Opportunities and Challenges. The Secretary General of the Caribbean Community H. E. Mr. Edwin Carrington will officially declare the opening of Research Day and the Guest Speaker will be Senator Delano Franklyn, Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.
Spanish, French and Portuguese
The Language Lab is offering classes in Portuguese, Spanish and French starting January 30. The minimum number of persons per class is ten. The offerings will depend on the demand. UWI Sports Awards
The UWI Sports, Office of Student Services Awards for the 2004-2005 academic period will be held at the Rex Nettleford Multi-Purpose Hall on Saturday, January 21, 2006 starting at 7:00 p.m. Mr. Leighton McKnight of Price Water House Coopers will be the Guest Speaker. Awards will be presented for Intramural, Inter-Collegiate, National Clubs and Intercampus Games competitions.
UWI Track and Field Invitational
The UWI Sports Department, Office of Student Services invites persons to the staging of its 5th renewal of the UWI Track and Field Invitational on Saturday, February 18, 2006 at the Stadium East Track starting at 9:00 a.m. A number of top local and junior athletes as well as overseas teams will be participating in this one-day event. The Department is inviting volunteers from the UWI, Mona Campus to officiate at the meet.
