Closing date for Application to UWI
The closing date for application to full-time undergraduate degree programmes at the UWI, Mona Campus is Friday, January 13, 2006.
Interested persons may apply online at http://www.mona.uwi.edu/admissions/forms or by contacting the Admissions Office, at the Mona Campus (Tel. No. 927-2779, 935-8704 or 935-8651).
Persons are reminded that supporting documents in the original as well as a copy must be presented with the application forms. Online applicants should submit their documents and the letter of acknowledgement.
A processing fee of $450 is applicable for paper applications.
Conference in honour of Barry Chevannes
The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of the West Indies, will be hosting a conference in honour of Professor Barrington Chevannes’ lifetime scholarly work, service and achievement. The conference is scheduled to be held at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre for Thursday, January 19 to Saturday 21.
Founders’ Park
The Grounds, Buildings and Premises Committee has approved the establishment of a Founders’ Park to be located at the site of the first class rooms on Gibraltar Hall Road, Mona Campus. Work on the project began on Wednesday, January 4.
Research Day 2006
Plans are now advanced for Research Day 2006 at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Research Day 2006 will take place on January 26 and 27 with the theme CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME): Opportunities and Challenges. The Secretary General of the Caribbean Community H. E. Mr. Edwin Carrington will officially declare the opening of Research Day and the Guest Speaker will be Senator Delano Franklyn, Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.
Semester II
The Second Semester for the 2005/2006 Academic year begins next Sunday, January 15. Classes will resume on Monday, January 16.
Spanish, French and Portuguese
The Language Lab is offering classes in Portuguese, Spanish and French starting January 30. The minimum number of persons per class is ten. The offerings will depend on the demand. The cost per course is $8,000.00 and is payable by January 26. For further information, please contact the Language Laboratory at 927-2743 OR Ext. 2382.
Teaching Skills Workshop
The Instructional Development Unit (IDU) invites members of the academic and senior administrative staff to its annual 3-day Teaching Skills Workshop to be held on Tuesday, January 10 to Thursday, January 12, 2006.
The Jamaica Committee Scholarship
The Jamaica Committee Scholarship was established in 2004 by Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica. The first contribution to the University of the West Indies Scholarship Programme was US$4, 000.00.
This award is available to graduates of Teachers’ Colleges with a Diploma in Primary Education, who have taught in a Primary School in Jamaica for the past two (2) years and who will be returning to teach in a Primary School in Jamaica for at least three (3) years.
Certificate Courses at MIAS
The Mona Institute of Applied Sciences (MIAS) is currently enrolling students for the certificate courses Introduction to Webpage Design and Web Development and Administration.
Web Page Design instructs students on website creation, modification and maintenance using Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and JavaScript. Starting Tuesday January 17, the course runs for 14 weeks and costs $24,000. The deadline for registration is January 9.
Irvine Hall Gate Entrance
The Irvine Hall gate is now closed to vehicular traffic to facilitate roadwork to upgrade that entrance to the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies. The project will entail the widening of the existing roadway leading off campus and the construction of a new guardhouse at the intersection of Gibraltar Camp Way and Rousseau Road.
