Luminary Awards
For the past five years, the University has taken the opportunity to bestow the ‘Luminary Award’ on Caribbean persons who have made outstanding contributions in their respective fields. The 2006 Luminary Award recipients are The Hon. Maurice Facey, Chairman of Pan-Jamaica Investment Trust Limited., Ambassador Peter King, Special Envoy of Jamaica; George Gobin, General Manager of Microsoft West Indies and Dancia Penn, Deputy Governor of the British Virgin Islands.
Medical Class of 2008
Members of the Class of 2008 in the UWI’s Faculty of Medical Sciences recently donated nearly half a million dollars to three local charities at a ceremony held in the Physiology Lecture Theatre at the UWI Mona Campus.
Mona Online Research Database
The first phase of the Mona Online Research Database was launched by Professor Kenneth Hall Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal, UWI, Mona Campus, on Thursday, January 26 in the Multifunctional Room of the Main Library. This project grew out of recognition by the Principal of the need to access, from a single source, information relative to the research activities on the Campus. He therefore challenged the Library to develop such a resource.
Perinatal Conference

Public Lecture – Best Practices in Tertiary Institutions
The University Council of Jamaica in association with University of Technology, Jamaica invites you to A Public Lecture entitled “Best Practices in Tertiary Institutions in Relation to Quality Assurance”.
The presenter is Mr. John Randall, former Chief Executive, Quality Assurance Agency, UK. The lecture will take place at the University of Technology, Jamaica, Technology Innovation Centre Conference Room Monday February 6, 2006 at 5:30 p.m.
Reggae Veterans Stage Public Forum at UWI
The Reggae Studies Unit at the University of the West Indies, Mona, will be hosting a forum entitled “Drum Talk - A Conversation between Lloyd Knibb and Lowell ’Sly’ Dunbar: Legendary Skatalites Drum Innovator meets Contemporary Master Drummer.” The event will be held on Tuesday February 7 at the Undercroft of the Senate Building, UWI, Mona, commencing at 6:00 p.m. The event is a reasoning designed to make Jamaican music history available to contemporary generations of University students and other interested persons.
UWI Bookshop Annual salute to Black History Month
The University Bookshop presents its annual salute to black history month. During the month of February, the Bookshop will be highlighting a selection of music by local and international black artistes between the hours of 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. daily.
Artiste to be featured will include Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Dennis Brown, Toots Hibbert, Carlene Davis, Anita Baker, and Luther Vandross. Interested persons are invited to attend.
Vice Chancellor's Student Ambassador Corps
UWI STAT (Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow) was officially launched on January 23 by the Vice Chancellor of the UWI, Professor E. Nigel Harris. UWI STAT was developed by the Vice Chancellor in association with the Alumni Relations arm of the Institutional Advancement Division, the Guild of Students of the three UWI campuses and the Directors of Student Services, in order to increase the ties between students and alumni and create student awareness of alumni relations and alumni involvement.
Applications for Mona Campus Research Fellowships
The Office of Planning and Institutional Research (Office of the Principal) is currently accepting applications for Mona Campus Research Fellowships and new initiative Grants for Semester II of the current academic year. Applications for fellowships and Grants funding should be addressed to the Chairman of the Research Fellowship Committee, c/o the Office of the Principal and should consist of the following: a research proposal with detailed budget and timeline and letters of support form both the Faculty Dean and the Department Head.
CARIBBEAN ACCREDITATION AUTHORITY FOR EDUCATION IN MEDICINE AND OTHER HEALTH PROFESSIONS
The Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM) was established in 2003 to ensure that medical schools in participating countries are recognized to be of international standard at the national, regional and international levels. Funded by CARICOM member governments which were the signatories to the agreement that established this new accrediting body, the CAAM was launched in 2004 at which time it became operational. The role of the Authority is to accredit medical education programmes leading to the MB.BS/M.D.
