Community Care of the Elderly in the Caribbean

The 14th Annual Regional Course entitled “Community Care of the Elderly in the Caribbean” will commence on January 23. Seventeen persons from the Caribbean will participate in the course, which is organized by Action Ageing Jamaica, Department of Community Health and Psychiatry. The Welcome and Opening Session will take place on Tuesday, January 24 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Action Ageing classroom in the MPH Building.

Inaugural Lecture

Former US Ambassador to Jamaica, Sue Cobb, will deliver the Inaugural Lecture in the new AFJ/Cobb Lecture series to be established at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus. The Lecture is entitled “Reflections as Ambassador and Envisioning Jamaica’s Future” and it will be delivered on Thursday, January 26, at the Undercroft of the Senate Building at the UWI, Mona Campus, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Members of the public are invited to attend.

Jamaican American Author to Launch Book at Red Bones

Jamaican-descended Thomas Glave, one of the most acclaimed writers of his generation in North America, will launch his exciting new book, “Words to our Now:” Imagination and Dissent, a collection of Lyrical and Political Essays,’ at the Red Bones Blues Café, 21 Braemar Avenue, Kingston 10, on Tuesday, January 24, at 6:00 p.m. The collection, written in what critics have praised as Glave’s “Fearless” style, tackles such controversial topics as the U.S-led war in Iraq, the abuses of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib, anti-gay violence and homosexuality in Jamaica and the U.S.

Music Unit

The Music Unit, Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts is currently registering students for the second semester in non-credit courses offered to students, staff and the non-campus community. Classes are held in the classroom of the Music Unit as follows: Guitar: Mondays 5:30 – 7:00 p.m., Voice Training for Singers Wednesdays 6.30 - 8.00 p.m., Piano/Keyboard at the convenience of the tutor and student.

Seminar on ‘National and Regional Identity

The UWI Mona invites all first year students to attend a Seminar on ‘National and Regional Identity’ to be held on Thursday, January 26 in the C5 Lecture Theatre, Department of Chemistry, from 1.00 – 200 p.m. The speaker will be Vice Chancellor Emeritus of the UWI, Professor Rex Nettleford. The Seminar is part of a series aimed at enhancing the University experience for first year students

Third Regional Trade Policy Course

The University of the West Indies in collaboration with the World Trade Organization will be conducting the Third Regional Trade Policy Course (RTPC) at the Mona Campus, over the period January 23 to April 14. The course, which was first held in January of 2004, is geared towards the training of government trade officials from throughout the Caribbean, including Cuba and the Dominican Republic. To date, some fifty-nine officials have been successfully trained, and it is expected that a further 26 will be trained this year.

UWI Homework Centre

In order to raise funds for the UWI Homework Centre, a special Benefit Dance Performance entitled “Movements to Care” will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. Special guest performers for the concert will include the UWI Dance Society, Edna Manley College School of Dance and the Wolmer’s Dance Troupe.

UWI Scholarship Examination 2006

The University of The West Indies (UWI) wishes to advise all candidates writing the UWI Scholarship Examination 2006 that the Scholarship Examination scheduled for Monday February 27 and Tuesday February 28, 2006 will now be held on Thursday March 02 and Friday March 03, 2006 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon on each day. The University regrets any inconvenience, which may result from this change.

14th Annual Regional Course

Action Ageing Jamaica, Department of Community Health and Psychiatry will host its 14 annual regional course entitled “Community Care of the Elderly in the Caribbean” beginning January 23. Seventeen (17) participants from several Caribbean islands will attend. The Welcome and Opening session will take place on Tuesday, January 24 from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m

2nd Biennial International Conference

The Department of Management Studies, UWI St. Augustine Campus, the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean Money Market Brokers (CMMB) will host the 2nd Biennial International Conference on Business, Banking and Finance form Monday, May 1 to Wednesday, May 3 at the UWI St. Augustine Campus.
