Commemoration Celebrations
Preparations have begun for the Annual Commemoration Celebrations and Alumni Week to take place at the UWI, Mona Campus over the period February 24. The Commemoration Celebrations provide an opportunity to celebrate the founding of the University and recognise its regional nature, while assisting to engender a greater sense of belonging and develop a feeling of camaraderie among staff, students and graduates. Each year, the celebrations are dedicated to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the institution. For 2006, the honoree will be Professor the Hon.
Instructional Development Unit Discussion Series
The Instructional Development Unit (IDU) will present two Brown Bag Discussions to be held at the IDU Training Room (Upstairs Interfaculty Lecture Theatre) on Wednesday, February 1and Tuesday, February 7, from 12:30 to 1:30. The topic on Wednesday is “Using Learning Objectives to Improve Teaching Learning and the presenter is Mrs. Monique Allen, Lecturer, University College of the Caribbean. On February 7, Dr. Diana Thorburn, Lecturer, Department of Government will speak on “How can the Practice of Summarizing Lecture Affect Students Learning”.
Latinos in the United States
The Department of Literatures in English will host the Film Series 'LATINOS in the UNITED STATES' during Semester II, 2006. Films will be shown each Friday at 11 a.m. in N4 in the Faculty of Humanities Education, UWI-Mona. The series is hosted by Dr. Gregory Stephens, Lecturer of Cultural Studies and Film, in association with E21h (Modern American Literary Prose); Special 2006 Topic: U.S. Caribbean & Latin American Immigrant Literature. New Principal for Mona Campus
UWI Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne and University Council and Senate are expected to convene a committee swiftly to search for a new Principal of the Mona Campus to replace outgoing Principal, Pro Vice Chancellor Professor the Hon. Kenneth Hall, who has been appointed Governor General of Jamaica. In a statement issued on Tuesday, UWI Vice Chancellor, Professor E. Nigel Harris welcomed the naming of Professor Hall as Governor General, and said he was richly deserving of this high office.
UWI Scholarship Examination
The University of the West Indies Scholarship Examination scheduled for Monday, February 27 and Tuesday, February 28, 2006 will now be held on Thursday, March 2 and Friday, March 3, 2006 from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon each day. The University regrets any inconvenience, which may result from this change.
UWIMAA Golf Tournament
The University of the West Indies Medical Association (UWIMAA) Golf Tournament will take place on Saturday, February 11, beginning at 6:30 a.m. at the Constant Spring Golf Club. The cost is $2,000 per person and proceeds will go towards the Medical Intermediate Care Unit, University Hospital of the West Indies.

Annual Graduate Recruitment Programme
The Office of Placement and Career Services invites final year students at the UWI Mona Campus to collect their packages for the Annual Graduate Recruitment Programme scheduled for March 21 – April 21. Packages are available at all Halls of Residence, the Commuting Students Lounge, as well as at the Office of Placement and Career Services. The deadline for registration for the Graduate Recruitment Programme is Friday, February 24. Final year students who need additional help with interviewing techniques are also invited to register for the mock interview programme by Friday, January 27.
Annual Research Day
The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus will host its Annual Research Day on January 26 and 27 with the theme CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME): Opportunities and Challenges. Research day will be declared open by the Secretary General of the Caribbean Community H. E. Mr. Edwin Carrington at the Opening Ceremony, which takes place on Thursday, January 26 at the Undercroft of the Senate Building beginning at 9:00 a.m. The guest speaker at the ceremony will be Senator Delano Franklyn, Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.
Applications for Mona Campus Research Fellowships
The Office of Planning and Institutional Research Office of the Principal) is currently accepting applications for Mona Campus Research Fellowships and new initiative Grants for Semester II of the current academic year. Applications for fellowships and Grants funding should be addressed to the Chairman of the Research Fellowship Committee, c/o the Office of the Principal and should consist of the following: a research proposal with detailed budget and timeline and letters of support form both the Faculty Dean and the Department Head.
