HIV/AIDS Forum
The University Health Centre in collaboration with the University HIV/AIDS Response Programme (UWI HARP) will host an HIV/AIDS Forum under the theme 'Women, Girls, HIV and AIDS' to mark World AIDS Day on December 1, 2004. Soundscape Conference at UWI Cave Hill
The Department of African American Studies, Ohio University and the Learning Resource Centre of The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill will host the conference Soundscapes: Reflections on Caribbean Oral and Aural Traditions, July 25 to July 29, 2005, at the UWI, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados. The conference will explore the various sound texts that are unique to the Caribbean.
The Leverhulme Trust Research Grants
The Leverhulme Trust is inviting proposals for research on (1) Abandoning the Past (2) The Family. Applicants are required to submit brief outlines of their research proposals, which must reach the Trust no later than 4 p.m. on December 14 2004.
UWI JobLink Website Re-Launch
The Office of Placement and Career Services UWI, Mona re-launched its Job Link Website at a ceremony held on November 17. The ceremony was intended to share with UWI students and graduates, as well as representatives of the business community and government organisations improvements and additional features that have made the site even more user friendly. The site has been functional for just over one year.

Annual Award
The Commonwealth Institute, in conjunction with the Centre for Commonwealth Education which it is establishing with the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge, is launching an annual award of GBP 3,000 for outstanding scholarship in educational research. The subject of the 2005 award is Aspects of Fiscal Decentralisation Impacting Primary and Secondary Education in Commonwealth Countries. The award is being offered by the Commonwealth Institute in order to achieve its goals of recognising and promoting excellence and innovation in education in the Commonwealth.

Credit Union Loans for Students
Students who are currently indebted to the UWI for the 2003/2004 academic year are advised that they can now access a “special” loan facility at the UWI (Mona) and Community Cooperative Credit Union Limited to secure funds to settle outstanding fees. Students who wish to apply for these loans must submit a loan application to the Credit Union no later than December 5, 2004. Simultaneously, students should also apply to the Credit Union for membership.
International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
The Centre for Gender and Development Studies UWI and the UWI HIV/AIDS Response Programme (UWIHARP), are mounting an exhibition in the Main Library of the Mona Campus to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women which will be observed on November 25, 2004. The day will also mark the start of a 16- Day Campaign of Activism Against Gender Violence which will end on December 10, 2004. The theme of this year’s observation is For the Health of Women, For the Health of the World: No More Violence.
JTBE Wireless Wide Area Network
The Joint Board of Teacher Education (JTBE) launched a Wireless Wide Area Network on Wednesday, November 17, 2004. The network was launched simultaneously at five sites including the Offices of the Joint Board, 14 Gibraltar Camp Way, UWI, Mona, the Ministry of Education and three colleges - St. Joseph’s Teachers College, Mico Teachers College and Northern Caribbean University in Mandeville. Minister Maxine Henry Wilson launched the site while speaking from the Ministry of Education and Principal of the UWI, Mona Campus, Professor the Hon.
