Course on Copyright Principles and Practices
For the second year running, the Department of Library and Information Studies will offer a graduate-level course on Copyright Principles and Practices specifically designed for Librarians and other information specialists. The course is being offered in recognition of the need to establish and maintain a balance between access to information and the protection of the rights of authors and publishers and in response to the increasing need for capacity building in this area.
Encarta Reference Library
Microsoft Jamaica has made a presentation to the Department of Library and Information Studies of a full product package of Encarta Reference Library 2004 for installation on twenty five computers at the Department. The presentation also includes a full product package of Encarta Reference Library 2004 Educators Edition.
Four Month Course in the Principles and Practice of Social Work
The Social Welfare Training Centre of the School of Continuing Studies, UWI is again offering the Four Month Course in the Principles and Practice of Social Work. The course will be held over the period January 12 to April 28 2005 and is designed to meet the needs of persons working in the broad area of social welfare either as professionals or voluntary workers in recognised agencies, who have not had professional training in social work. Applicants should have had three or more years experience, but special consideration will be given to others not meeting these criteria.
Perinatal Conference 2005
The Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Child Health in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Mona announces its Perinatal Conference 2005 to take place February 11-13, 2005. The theme of the conference is The Unborn Patient: The Art and Science of Foetal Medicine and it will take place in the Main Medical Lecture Theatre at the University Hospital of the West Indies. The British Virgin Islands Conference
The School of Continuing Studies of The University of the West Indies will hold the British Virgin Islands Conference from May 26-28, 2005 in the British Virgin Islands. The British Virgin Islands Conference is a multi-disciplinary conference focusing on issues relevant to the islands. This is the tenth conference in the school’s country conference series. The conference will be open to the public and will provide a forum for the discussion of local issues. Abstracts are invited from persons with a research interest in the British Virgin Islands.
The Environmental Foundation of Jamaica
The Environmental Foundation of Jamaica has approved grants for a number of projects being undertaken by different departments at the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies. Funds have been approved for projects to be undertaken in the fields of the environment, biological diversity, coastal zone and marine management as well as early childhood development. The proposals from the UWI departments were accepted by the Foundation after a call for proposals from non-governmental organizations island wide.
UWI Mona & Community Co-op. Credit Union
The UWI Mona & Community Co-op. Credit Union has offered a rebate of one per cent of the interest paid to students who are good borrowers. The offer is referred to as a patronage refund. The Credit Union has been assigned to administer a Revolving Loan Scheme for the students and plans are in place not only to grant these special loans, but also to instill in the students the necessity of saving regularly and borrowing wisely.
Long Service Award Ceremony
The Annual Long Service Awards Ceremony at the UWI, Mona Campus will take place on Thursday, December 9 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Some One Hundred (100) members of the academic, senior administrative, professional, administrative technical and support staff will be recognized for service ranging from 15-30 years. Guest speaker at the Ceremony will be President of the Jamaica Exporters’ Federation, Mrs. Audrey Hinchcliffe.

Carol Service
The Annual Carol Service (Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols) for the Mona Campus will he held in the University Chapel on Sunday, December 12 at 7:00 p.m. There service will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Roderick Hewitt and Rev. Philip Robinson will deliver the sermon.
Higher Degree Programmes
Applications are now invited for entry in September 2005 from suitably qualified persons who wish to pursue higher degree programmes. The deadline for the receipt of completed application forms is January 31, 2005. Final year students are advised to apply for entry to the programme of their choice before the January 31 deadline.
