UWI, Mona Hosts the First Temple Fair in Jamaica

The Confucius Institute at UWI, Mona hosts a Temple Fair, the first of its kind in Jamaica on Friday, February 11, 2011 starting at 10 am at the Confucius Institute UWI, Mona. The Temple Fair will provide an authentic Chinese experience featuring Lion dancers, Tai Chi performers, Gu Zheng (harp) players, Chinese food, accessories and calligraphy. The event is a part of the Institute’s efforts to promote Chinese language and culture.
The Confucius Institute supports local Chinese teaching through short courses in Chinese language (Mandarin), Tai Chi and Chinese Calligraphy. In addition interpretation and translation services are provided by the Institute.
UWI Lecturer Explores ‘Man Vibes’ in the Jamaican Dancehall in New Book

The Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS) at the UWI, Mona will host the launch of the book “Man Vibes: Masculinities in the Jamaican Dancehall” authored by Dr. Donna P. Hope, Senior Lecturer in the Institute. The launch takes place on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at 6 p.m. at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. Clyde McKenzie will be the main speaker.
Research Day 2011

The University of the West Indies, Mona will host its annual Research Day on January 27-28, 2011. Dr. Christopher Tufton, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries will be the guest speaker at the Opening Ceremony which takes place on Thursday, January 27, 2011 starting at 9 am at the Undercroft. This year’s Research Day is focused on the theme of Supporting the Agriculture Sector through Teaching Research, and Entrepreneurship. Research day will also feature the Grace/UWI Agriculture Schools’ Challenge Quiz on Thursday, January 27 at 10:45 am at the Undercroft. The Quiz will feature the three schools that participated in the Grace/ UWI Agriculture Championship namely: Papine High, Ardenne High and Oberlin High.
UWI Lecturer Explores Dancehall from the Slave Ship to the Ghetto

Dr. Sonjah Stanley Niaah, Lecturer in the Institute of Caribbean Studies, UWI, Mona launches her book, “Dancehall: From Slave Ship to Ghetto on Monday, January 31 at 6 pm at the Rex Nettleford Hall Multi-Purpose Room.
Dancehall: From Slave Ship to Ghetto is a noteworthy publication as it documents the institutional, industrial and cultural significance of Jamaican dancehall in local and transnational contexts looking through the lens of over 400 years of Black Atlantic performance history, and through the eyes of a Jamaican.
Book Launch: Michael Manley’s Caribbean Vision of Justice

"Michael Manley’s Caribbean Vision of Justice: Justice as Equality" is the titled of the book authored by Dr. Anna Perkins, Office of the Board of Undergraduate Studies, Mona. The book will be launched on Monday, January 31, 2011 at 6 pm at the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI, Mona. Delano Franklyn, Attorney –at-law will be the guest speaker.

Film of the Month Series Continues at the Confucius Institute
The Confucius Institute at UWI, Mona hosts its first film for 2011 in its Film of the Month Series on Friday, January 28 at 6:30 pm at the Confucius Institute. This month’s film is entitled, 'Temptation of A Monk’ directed by Clara Law. The film will be shown in Chinese with English sub-titles.
The film is set in the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, in the 7th century China. It tells the story of a General, Shi Yang-sheng who journeys to a monastery after being tricked to leave the crown prince unguarded. The Prince is then murdered and his brother becomes emperor and Shi Yang-sheng’s life is at risk of being murdered.
The university community is especially invited.

Public Lecture on Sea Level Rise and the Caribbean

The Department of Physics and the Department of Geography and Geology, UWI, Mona present the third lecture in the Climate Talks Series. Dr. Murray Simpson, Senior Research Associate at the School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford and Chairman, CARIBSAVE Partnership will deliver the Lecture. It examines losses and damages of climate change in the Caribbean. The Lecture takes place on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 5:30 pm at Physics Lecture Room B, UWI, Mona.
Condolence

The University of the West Indies, Mona expresses sincere condolences to Ms. Fay Innerarity, Office of Student Services and Development who has lost her mother, Ivy Innerarity. The funeral service for Ivy Innerarity will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 1 pm at the Jarreton Baptist Church, Watt Town in St. Ann.
A bus leaving from Papine gas station at 8 am will transport persons wishing to attend the funeral service. For further information contact Ms. Innerarity at 702-3493.
Postgraduate Student Awarded Prize for Survey

Ms. Karen Clarke, a postgraduate student pursuing the Master of Science degree in Sociology-Social Policy and Administration was recently presented with a laptop at a Handing Over Ceremony held at the Office of Graduate Studies, School for Graduate Studies and Research.
