Champions for Life 2006’ a Summer Camp
The UWI, Sports Department will be staging their ‘Champions for Life 2006’ a Summer Camp with a difference for children between the ages of 8-16 years under the theme ‘Building Bridges of Hope and Champions for Life’ at the UWI, Mona Bowl from July 10-21, 2006. It will seek to teach life skills through sports and build bridges between various groups. The camp will include presentations from motivational speakers and sports personalities along with sporting instructions by National Coaches.
Condolences - Steve Bailey
The University community is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing in the early hours of Saturday, June 24 of Steve Bailey, a PhD. student in the Department of Geography and Geology and a Resident Advisor at Chancellor Hall. In their tribute to Steve, the Department of Geography and Geology noted that “The loss of his emerging talent to the department and to the University and the loss of his role model qualities to students are immeasurable losses for all of us in the University community.
Departments Commended
Pursuant to the University-wide review of the Examinations process and the recommendations made to improve the process, Heads of Departments were again exhorted to make the effort to ensure that the mark sheets for the Semester II examinations are submitted by a specific deadline.
Mental Health Tips for the Hurricane Season
When there is a natural disaster all aspects of peoples’ lives will be affected. Physical needs take priority in the period immediately after the disaster but it is also important to pay attention to emotional needs. How we feel will help to determine how well we are able to cope with the stresses.
Qualitative Methods in Health Research Workshop
The Dean’s Office, Faculty of Medical Sciences in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Jamaica will host a Qualitative Methods in Health Research Workshop from July 18-20, 2006. The venue will be the Epidemiological Research Unit, located at the Sickle Cell Unit. The cost of the workshop is $8,500 and will include the cost of resource materials. The training offered by the workshop sessions will enable participants to: Design Qualitative Studies, Analyse Qualitative data, Appraise Qualitative Literature.
The Fifth William Dennis Memorial Lecture
Professor Graham Serjeant, Professor Emeritus, University of the West Indies and Chairman of the Sickle Cell Trust in Jamaica will deliver the Fifth William Dennis Memorial Lecture to be held on July 6 in the Main Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of the West Indies, Mona beginning at 5:00 p.m. Sponsored by Jamaica Money Market Brokers Limited, this lecture is held to commemorate the life of William Dennis, Senior Paediatric Surgeon, who served at the Bustamante Hospital for 25 years until the time of his death in 1999.
Uriel Salmon
The University of the West Indies has learned with regret of the passing of Mr. Uriel Salmon who taught in the Department of Management Studies for some 25 years. In their tribute to him the Department of Management Studies noted that during his tenure with the University thousands of students passed through his hands and all have fond memories of ‘Mr. Sammy’. UWI and UNDP Sign Joint Proposal for UWI Disaster Risk Reduction Centre
The University of the West Indies and the United Nations Development Programme have signed a joint proposal for the establishment of a Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction at the UWI. The joint proposal was signed by Professor E. Nigel Harris Vice Chancellor of the UWI and Juan Carlos Espinola, Resident Representative of UNDP on Tuesday, June 27 in the Council Room, UWI, Mona.
Award to UWI Health Centre
The Pan American Health Organization presented an award on World Blood Donor Day, held recently, to the University Health Centre for its outstanding and consistent services to the National Blood Transfusion Service.
BEd. in Literacy Studies for OECS Countries
The Department of Educational Studies, UWI, Mona has just launched the UWI’s first undergraduate online programme, the Bachelor of Education in Literacy Studies to participants in four Organization of Eastern Caribbean States countries: St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Dominica. The programme is a new modality to meet expressed needs and development goals from the ministries of education in these four territories and is offered to trained teachers in primary and secondary schools.
